Key findings

According to the report, one in every five adults in Bulgaria had never communicated with other ethnic groups, slightly over 30 per cent communicated frequently, and nearly a half rarely did so. Just 22 per cent would agree to live in the same town or city with someone of Turkish origin, and 15 per cent would accept someone of Roma origin. Readiness for family relationships with people from the Turkish ethnic group was expressed by 15 per cent (and 5 per cent for Roma people). Eighteen per cent fully agree that there are too many foreigners in Bulgaria, against 19 per cent who totally disagree. One in three agrees that Islam is alien to Bulgarian culture and that the government should not allow more Muslims to settle in the country.
